Tree pose is a challenging posture that will develop your balance and your mind/body connection, leaving you feeling calm and refreshed! Additional benefits of the pose include strengthening of muscles, ligaments, and tendons of the feet, calves, thighs, and hips. Since it is a weight-bearing pose, you will also strengthen the bones of the hips and legs. Tree pose helps you to establish pelvic stability, engage your core, and help reinforce good posture. You may feel a stretch through the inner thighs and groin, and also through the chest and shoulders depending on where you have your hands.
Always remember to work in the range that is safe for you. Your balance may change daily so always start conservative and then increase the difficulty once you are steady. You can adjust the pose to make it easier by keeping the toes of your lifted leg on the floor or you can make it harder by placing the lifted foot directly into the inside calf of your standing leg. Other modifications are based on your hands. Keeping both hands on a supportive structure (chair, bar, table) gives you something to safely hold just in case you lose your balance. To increase complexity take one or both hands off the support. You can press the palms together at heart center, or reach the arms up overhead and really stretch it out! If you are wobbling that means you are getting stronger and really working your proprioceptive system! Most importantly, smile and have fun with the pose!
You can follow along to this video clip as I guide you through the pose. Feel free to practice the pose daily or as often as you like!
