Farm Fresh Local Food – Be a Locavore

We all have heard of the wonderful benefits of eating seasonal food that is locally grown. By eating seasonal food we are getting freshly picked, perfectly ripe and nutrient rich food. This also gives us a variety of nutrients by alternating which foods we are eating. Buying local foods supports local farmers who care as much about your neighborhood as you do. Local produce travels only a short distance to get to you, helping the environment even more by using less fuel. Here are some local choices that are in season right now!

Blueberries provide 24% of your daily recommended Vitamin C along with being high in antioxidants.

Broccoli packs 220% of your daily recommended Vitamin C and 116% of Vitamin K in just one cup.

If you’re looking to increase your Vitamin A intake have one medium carrot, this will give you 203% of your daily recommended Vitamin A.

Peppers are only 24 calories a cup and contain 159% of your daily recommended Vitamin C and 15% of your recommended Vitamin B6.

One cup of raspberries offers 32% of your daily recommended dietary fiber, and 53% of your recommended Vitamin C.

One Cup of spinach is only 7 calories and contains 56% of your daily recommended Vitamin A, 14% of Vitamin C, and is also high in niacin and zinc.

Summer Squash is 55% of your daily recommended Vitamin C and 20% of your daily recommended Vitamin B6.

The Needham Farmers Market is open until November 22nd this year, and is located at the parking lot behind Needham Bank, Garden Street entrance in Needham Center. This is only ¼ miles from the center of North Hill’s Campus. Any Sunday between 12:00 and 4:00 the Needham Farmers Market is an ideal place to find local, seasonal, and fresh food.
